Why Homeshare Scotland was founded

The idea for Homeshare Scotland came from my own family experience. My father lived alone in our old family home in Murrayfield until the age of 93. While I admired his pursuit of independence and will to do everything himself, he was starting to struggle with some household tasks, like the wheelie bins for example. He was also feeling very lonely at home, spending days in alone each week, and as a family we worried about him struggling and not enjoying his days.

After some discussion, my sisters and I persuaded him to consider sharing his home with someone who could help add a bit of life back to the home – we just had to find the right person he could feel comfortable with. A few weeks later we met Latifa, who had recently moved to Edinburgh for work. She is a charming person and they immediately got on well; we knew it was a good match when we found them chatting in the garden over a glass of wine.

The impact was transformative. My father gained companionship and some help with more difficult household tasks, Latifa found a welcoming home close to work at an affordable price, and myself and my sisters no longer worried about him being all alone. It was a genuine win-win for everyone involved – and Latifa still lives with dad today.

Of course there are tens of thousands of elderly people across the country in the same position; living in a house with spare bedrooms while wishing they were less lonely and had some household help.  At the same time there are so many younger people struggling to find affordable, secure accommodation. Homeshare is an efficient and compassionate solution to both these problems.

Homeshare Scotland was created to make that solution work properly; safely, thoughtfully, and with care.
