Becoming a homesharer

"Homeshare fosters connections between
kind people, creating a supportive
community that strengthens society."

Thinking about becoming a Sharer?

We’re so pleased you’re considering becoming a homesharer. At Homeshare Scotland, we bring together kind, reliable people like you with older adults who could benefit from a little extra help at home. In return for affordable accommodation, you’ll offer around 10 hours a week of light support and companionship.

Homeshare is about mutual benefit and shared respect. You’ll be welcomed into someone’s home – not as a tenant or lodger, but as a trusted guest and part of a unique, supportive arrangement.

We understand that you also need space to live your life, work, study or rest. That’s why we work closely with you and the homeowner to make sure boundaries are clear, expectations are realistic, and the arrangement works for everyone.

What You Can Expect from Homeshare

  • Affordable accommodation – A private room in a safe, welcoming home
  • Purpose and connection – You’ll make a meaningful difference in someone’s life
  • Support and structure – We’re here to help from application to move-in and beyond
  • Balanced expectations – You’ll offer help, not care and still have time for your own work or studies

What’s expected of you as a Sharer

  • You’ll offer around 10 hours of agreed help per week – this might include shopping, cooking, errands, tech support, or simply being present in the evenings
  • You’ll treat the home and the householder with respect and kindness
  • You’ll keep your space tidy and communicate openly about any concerns or changes
  • You’ll work with us and the householder to agree routines, privacy needs, and house rules
  • You’ll stay in the home around 6/7 nights a week and will give advance notice to your homeshare companion if you plan to be away for multiple nights in a row.
  • You must be able to disclose any spent or unspent convictions and undergo background checks.

What you are not expecteded to do

  • Provide personal care or medical assistance
  • Be available 24/7 – you are entitled to have your own time and independence
  • Take on responsibilities that haven’t been agreed in advance

How we support you

  • We carry out a full vetting and matching process to find the right arrangement for you
  • We help both you and the householder talk about routines, needs, and boundaries before moving in
  • We check in regularly and are available to support or mediate if needed
  • We make sure your time and contribution are respected and appreciated

Homeshare isn’t just a way to find affordable housing, it’s a chance to connect, to live with purpose, and to support someone while building a home of your own.
